Milan, Palazzo della Ragione
Palazzo della Ragione is one of the oldest and most prestigious palaces of Milan. It is located near Piazza Duomo, and was built in 1233 by order of the podestà Oldrado da Tresseno.
In 1773, during the reign of the Empress Maria Theresa, the palace became the seat of legal archives; this is the reason why it was completely renovated on neoclassical style, as projected by the architect Francesco Croce. The building has rectangular shape, and one of the most beautiful rooms is the large hall on the first floor, which, since the Eighties has hosted numerous shows and exhibitions. One of the most important are the exhibitions dedicated to McCurry and Stanley Kubrick.
In the Central Hall, visitors can admire many frescoes, including one that depicts the Crucifixion, realized in 1400. On the facade of the top floor, it is possible to admire a round arch with the relief of Oldrado from Tresseno, and the commemorative plaque which celebrates the construction of Palazzo della Ragione.
