Marrakech: Bahia Palace
Bahia Palace is located in the northern perimeter of the ancient jewish quarter of the city of Marrakesh, the Mellah. We do not know the precise date of its construction, but it seems it was commissioned between 1859 and 1870, and completed within 1900. Its construction happened during the reign of two different men (Si Moussa and Ba Ahmed), father and son, who both served as Grand Vizir for ‘Alawid Sharifs.
The areas on which it was built were added bit by bit by the sultan, and this has greatly influenced in the structure and architecture of Bahia Palace. There is no specific plan according to which it was built: it’s irregular, almost labyrinth like. It extends for 8 hectares, in which you will be able to visit gardens, pavilions, and courtyard buildings of varying dimensions.
They say that its shape has a meaning behind it: it is because in that way the concubines and the spouses would never meet. It seems that the name of the palace actually comes from the most loved of Si Moussa’s lovers, Bahia “the beautiful“.
