London: Southwark Cathedral
Southwark Cathedral is one of the most beautiful gothic churches in the whole city. Its complete name is The Cathedral and Collegiate Church of St Saviour and St Mary Overie and is the mother church of the Anglican Diocese of Southwark.
Southwark’s Cathedral is found next to the London Bridge, on the southern side of the Thames. The place where it rises has been a place of christian worship since over 1000 years: it seems that in 1106 in its place there was an Augustinian priory. After the dissolution of monasteries, a church dedicated to St Mary Overie (over the river) was built. This was badly damaged during the famous fire of London in 1212; the church that currently stand in its place was thus built, one of the first in gothic style in the whole city.
