London and the Pancake
Pancakes are flat and round cakes typical of America; they are now widespread all around the world, and London is the perfect place to enjoy these delicious specialties!
They are usually eaten for breakfast, even if they may be served at any time. Pancakes are made of butter, flour, milk, sugar and eggs, and it seems that the recipe takes origin from the French crêpes. There are many variations: sometimes cinnamon is added, or milk is replaced by yogurt. They are accompanied by maple syrup or honey; however, they are often served also with bacon.
In London, the pancakes are a tradition of Shrove Tuesday, also known as Pancake Tuesday, during which these cakes are served with sugar and lemon, following the typical recipe of French crêpes. A very fun and interesting event is the Pancake Race, which takes place on Shrove Tuesday. Many chefs run for the marathon, which takes place Covent Garden, and, along the way, they have to skip their pancakes on the frying pan!
