Istanbul, Galata Tower
Galata Tower is one of the most magnificent monuments of Istanbul.
It is located in Galata district, just to the north of the so-called Golden Horn, the inlet which separates Galata from the Old Istanbul. The tower is considered one of the symbols of the city, thanks to its unique cylindrical shape surmounted by a cone. It is about 67 meters high, and is made of stone. It was built by some Italian settlers during the expansion of Genoese colony in Constantinople, and was initially called Christea Turris (Tower of Christ). During Ottoman period, the tower was used for spotting fires in the city; moreover, in that period it was restored, but the works didn’t change the structure.
If you are planning to visit Galata Tower, the sunset is the perfect moment to enjoy a beautiful view of the city! Moreover, here you will find a restaurant and a night club with a panoramic terrace, from where you can admire the Old Istanbul, the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus.
