One of the most charming attractions of Berlin is Gendarmenmarkt.
It is a beautiful square located into Mitte district, between the Deutscher Dom, the Französischer Dom and the Konzerthaus. It was called Gendarmenmarkt because the Gendarmerie’s stables was once located here. During the reign of Frederick the Great, the square was renovated according to the architecture of the Italian Piazza del Popolo, located in Rome. On emperor’s orders, the two towers with the characteristic domes were built on the square. In the Gendarmenmarkt’s center, the beautiful statue of Friedrich Schiller, realized by the artist Reinhold Begas, stands out.
The statue is located in front of the Konzerthaus, one of the most important concert halls of Berlin. Christmas time is one of the best periods to visit Gendarmenmarkt: the largest Berlin Christmas market is organized here. You will find many food stands, Christmas lights, and popular choirs singing German Christmas carols!
