Barcelona, Palau de la Música Catalana
Palau de la Música Catalana (or Music Palace) is one of the most charming palaces of Barcelona. It is the most important concert hall of the city, and was built for Orfeó Català, the Catalan choral society.
The building was projected by the architect Lluís Domènech y Montaner, and was inaugurated in 1908. It represents one of the most influent examples of Spanish Modernism; moreover, the whole building is dedicated to music, and the decorative elements remind to the most important music composers. The exterior facade is decorated with a series of busts and frescos, but the most amazing part of Palau de la Música Catalana is its interiors.
The ceiling of the entrance is majestically decorated with ceramics and glass applications, while the foyer is sober but elegant, decorated with large bows. Visitors can also admire a group of sculpture reproducing the famous “Ride of the Valkyries” by Wagner; moreover, a beautiful statue of Beethoven, realized Pau Gargallo and Dìdac Massana stands out. In 1997, Palau de la Música Catalana was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
