Barcelona, Frederic Marès museum
One of the most interesting museums of Barcelona is Frederic Marès museum.
It is located in the heart of Gòtico district, in the beautiful Palau Reial Mayor. The museum is dedicated to the famous Spanish sculptor Frederic Marès: part of the works on display was realized by the author, others come from his private collection. Palau Reial Mayor was chosen as museum’s seat to celebrate Marès: in fact, the first public Marès’ exposition took place here, in 1944. The exhibition includes various kinds of sculptures, from those dating back to XIX century, to the incunabula and to medieval elements. Visitors can also admire many stucco sculptures, tombs, ruins and documents.
The museum was inaugurated in 1948, and, in 1970, Marès donated part of his private collection to expand the exhibition. The author donated his works to Spanish museums, such as Museo de Historia de Sabadell, Museo de la Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid, and Biblioteca de Catalunya.
